Behind You

"Give me the knife!"
"No!"
"Give me the damn knife!"
"I won't let you take your life!"

"Life? What life?
I don't have one"
"Yes you do,
and people who love you"

"Love isn't real
I feel cold and nothing else
It isn't real
I don't have anything to live for"

He stared at her
He saw that she truly believed that
She's past being convinced, isn't she
We'll I'm not going to let her die

"It is real, I do love you"
"You're just saying that now
Just let me go!
It's what I want!"

"I'm never letting you go
never again will I loosen my grip!"
She wiped the tears from her eyes
"Really? Will you?"

He pulled back the knife
That he snatched from her hand
And shoved it into the wall
And pulled her into his arms

She cried on his shoulder
And he patted her back
This is what she wanted
Something no one else gave her

"I love you" he said
She continued to sob
"I'll take care of you from now on
I swear" he whispered in her ear

She has been abused her whole life
And she was about to end it today
She finally got herself to do it
And I made it just in time

He carried her from her bedroom
And down the stairs
Then he sat her down on the couch
"Where are you going?" she asked worried

"Stay right here, okay
I'm going to pack your things
You shouldn't stay in this house
Any longer"

She was silent as he rushed to grab her things
He was afraid that she might attempt to kill herself again
He heard the sound of something shatter to the floor
And his heart stopped

She didn't!
He dropped the bag and went down the stairs and saw her
"I'm sorry!" she said
"I went to get a glass of water and my hand shook"

"Shh, it's alright
You just scared me
I don't want you to harm yourself"
"Sorry"

"I'm almost done packing alright
Be careful and don't pick up the glass
I don't want you to cut up your hands"
He grabbed her bag and put it in the trunk of his car

"Come here" he said gently and reached for her hand
She grabbed his and she leaned her head on his shoulder
As they walked out to his car
He feels warm she thought

They drove off and she didn't look back once
"It's all behind you" he said
"Yes, thank you" she held his hand tighter
"Are we going to your house?" she asked

"Yes, it will be your new home
If that's what you want?"
"Back there wasn't home,
I want to stay with you, always"

He lifted her hand and kissed it
"I really do love you
Don't ever forget that"
"I won't. I l-love you too"
